Ever since our first visit to Boone, NC, in July of 2024, we have been big fans of Lost Province Brewing Co. Our fondness may be partly related to its location in the Appalachian Mountains where you can enjoy beautiful scenery, art, music, and outdoor sports all year long. Besides the location, we were blown away by the award-winning beer, pizza, and atmosphere at the Lost Province Downtown Brewpub, and we hoped to make it back there one day soon.

Important NC Beer Explorer Tip: When consuming alcohol, always have a designated driver. Be safe out there, friends!

Flash forward to Thanksgiving 2025: by Black Friday, I’d had my fill of hosting, cooking, and entertaining for a while, and I was ready to get away and take it easy someplace relaxing. I can’t be the only person who ever wanted to run away for a few days and just eat, sip beer, sleep, and sightsee on her own sweet time. So, I booked myself a cozy Airbnb in Boone for a “Momcation,” aka “Me Time.”

I had told myself this was purely a pleasure trip, no business whatsoever, but since I would be going by Lost Province Brewing anyway... It's probably easy to predict what happened next: I came down with a bad case of FOMO.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last ten years and don’t know what “FOMO” is, it’s an acronym for “Fear of Missing Out.” It's a situation that arises when you have reluctance around something, but you decide to put in the time and effort anyway because you know you’ll regret it if you don’t. That's not to suggest that we don't enjoy visiting and writing about NC breweries. It's just that sometimes, one needs a break from all kinds of busyness, you know?

No Solo FOMO Here!

Anyhow, the night before I was leaving on my trip, I emailed Lost Province and asked if I could get on the schedule with a brewer, one of the owners, or a tap room manager. Despite my firm plans for doing absolutely nothing, I was thrilled when Adam Cranford, the head brewer himself, emailed me back and said he was out of town, but he would line up some other contacts for me. And he did! I was able to set up some time with Brand Ambassador Kaitlyn Kornbluth and Brewer Hunter Toney at the Hardin Creek/Daniel Boone Drive location.

Quick Backstory

The Lost Province backstory is a familiar one in brewing circles. It all started in Chapel Hill in the 1980s when owners Lynn and Andy Mason started homebrewing, and like so many others, Andy grew increasingly passionate about his beer, winning several awards in the process. By 2012, the couple had settled permanently in Boone, and In 2013, their business was formed. All that was left was finding the perfect location. After months of looking,130 North Depot Street became available, and Lost Province officially opened its doors in August of 2014. You can read their story in more detail on their website.

Meet Me at the Taproom

The winter weather couldn't have been more cooperative when I rolled up to the Brewery & Taproom on a cold but sunny Saturday morning. Kaitlyn and Hunter both made me feel welcomed immediately, and we were soon happily collaborating on the stories we wanted to tell about their experiences at Lost Province. Then we got to my favorite part – tasting the beer. Check out our video, and see tasting notes below.

Later that Evening ...

Naturally, later that evening I went to the Lost Province Brewpub in downtown Boone. When I got there, the place was buzzing with people who were eating, drinking, and grooving to the music provided by Funkupation. As an amateur musician, I have to mention that the band’s volume was absolutely perfect (groove-able but not overpowering), and the acoustics were surprisingly good!

The rest of downtown was pretty dead, especially for a Saturday evening in a college town, but the crowd at Lost Province was working hard at having a good time. There was a long wait for a seat at the bar, never mind a table. I jumped on the waitlist, ordered myself a beer, and indulged in my favorite pastime: people watching.

Did I mind standing around on my own, drinking my beer and observing? NOPE! I lived for it ! None of it felt like “work” at all, and I was surrounded by friendly folks in fine spirits. I finally got an open seat at the bar, and when my Lost Province pizza with its crispy, wood-fired crust arrived in all its glory, my weekend retreat was complete.

Feel free to take a page from me and go explore Lost Province Brewing and Boone (solo or with someone) so you don’t have FOMO.

Footnote: Coyote Kitchen

Before we wrap up our Lost Province explorations, I want to add a few words about the newest addition to the Lost Province family of venues, Coyote Kitchen. Although I didn’t get a chance to visit it on this trip, I definitely will do so next time. Kaitlyn worked there before she became a Lost Province Brand Ambassador and Accounts Specialist, and she had wonderful things to say about it.

Coyote Kitchen and Lost Province Tap Room has been a long-standing Boone staple, open for about 20 years serving Caribbean and Southwest soul food. Coyote Kitchen also focuses on allergy friendly and gluten-free food and housemade dessert. The vibe is said to be similar to that of the Brewpub, and there are plenty of fun events, including “Taco Tuesday” when they offer $3 pints and $3 tacos. Check out the Coyote Kitchen website, and make plans to visit the next time you’re in Boone. We certainly will!

Lynne and Andy recently passed the torch down to their daughter Carolyn, son JP, and son-in law, Richard, who are now running Lost Province. Lynne and Andy recently retired, and while they are still around helping out sometimes, they are not a part of the day-to-day operations.
