Important NC Beer Explorer Tip: When consuming alcohol, always have a designated driver. Be safe out there, friends!

Driving into Charlotte on a rainy afternoon, we had just enough time to check in with a brewery over lunch. We had just drank a Juicy Jay IPA the other day and really enjoyed it. So, since we found ourselves in West Charlotte, we stopped into Legion Brewing’s Production Brewery and restaurant.

Legion/West Morehead is located in an up-and-coming renewed area, in the midst of new apartment homes, restaurants, and coffee bars. The area and the brewery/restaurant had a lively energy, even on a rainy day.

The brewery/taproom was beautiful inside with stainless steel brewing tanks and pipes framing the clean lines of the bar and hanging glassware. Our server, Dave, greeted and quickly seated us at a high top table. Rebecca perused the space while I ordered lunch. The open kitchen boasted several open flame vertical spits supporting rotisserie chicken and porchetta. She was lucky enough to spot brewer Scott Griffin carrying a bag of hops over his shoulder and asked if he could join us for a quick chat.

Legion Brewing has four taprooms in Charlotte, including their original location established in 2015 in the Plaza Midwood area. Their motto is “Campfire Hospitality” with commitment to community and fostering gatherings of family and friends. They are known for their award-winning beers and a menu that “pushes the boundaries of brewery food” (according to their website). New menus were launched at each Legion taproom this year under the direction of Executive Chef Gene Briggs. The focus is on local ingredients, inventive pairings and an elevated brewery dining experience.

We were blown away by our delicious entrés, which include the Smoked Brisket Melt and the Peach, Prosciutto and Burrata Pizza. Truly, the food was so good, even if we weren't beer drinkers, we would go to Legion for the food alone.

We highly recommend a visit to one of Legion’s Brewery/restaurants. Be sure to do as we did on our visit, and ask Dave for menu suggestions and beer pairings. And if you like stouts, be sure to say; “Sláinte.”

Scott was gracious enough to take some time with us while we had our lunch and enjoyed glasses of flagship Juicy Jay IPA and Slainte Dry Irish Stout (recent World Beer Cup gold medal winner; see tasting notes below). We shot a video of our talk with Scott but had some technical issues with the sound so we are summarizing his comments.
